Custom Signs Made To Stand Out

Custom wood, acrylic, carved and dimensional signs for businesses, ranches, homes and properties.

Designed and handcrafted in Black Forest, Colorado.

Custom Live Edge Business Sign

The Plaid Dog Workshop creates distinctive signs for businesses, ranches, homes, cabins, restaurants and rural properties. Each project is designed around its purpose, location, materials and viewing distance.

We combine traditional woodworking with laser engraving, CNC carving and precision-cut acrylic to create signs with depth, character and a professional finished appearance.

Whether you need a business logo sign, ranch entrance marker, address sign or custom menu board, we will help develop a sign that fits your space and tells people exactly where they are.

"A custom sign should feel like it belongs where it is installed."

Custom ranch entrances, farm signs, gate signs, cabin signs and property markers designed to reflect the land and people behind them.

Custom Wood Signs

Wood creates warmth, texture and a handcrafted appearance. Choose from engraved, carved, painted, dimensional or live-edge designs.

Acrylic Signs

Acrylic provides crisp lettering, clean edges and a modern appearance. It can be engraved, cut, layered or combined with wood.

Outdoor Signs

Outdoor signs require careful material selection, finishing, mounting, drainage and protection from weather.
We design signs around their actual installation location rather than treating every outdoor environment the same.

Have an Idea That Does Not Fit a Category?

Not every project starts with a finished design.

You may have:

  • A rough sketch

  • An existing logo

  • A photograph of a sign you like

  • A business name but no sign concept

  • An unusual installation location

  • A material combination you want to explore

  • An older sign that needs a new direction

Send what you have. We can help determine what is practical and develop a sign around your goals, location and budget.

Handcrafted in Colorado
Your sign is made in our Black Forest, Colorado workshop.

Our Process

From Idea to Finished Sign

1. Tell Us What You Need

Send your wording, logo, approximate dimensions and intended location.

2. Share the Installation Area

Photographs of the wall, gate, entrance or property help us plan the proportions and construction.

3. Select Materials and Style

We will help determine whether wood, acrylic, live edge, engraving, carving or dimensional construction is the best fit.

4. Review the Design

You will receive a proof showing the proposed layout before production begins.

5. We Make Your Sign

The sign is engraved, carved, cut, finished and assembled in our Black Forest workshop.

6. Pickup or Shipping

Completed projects can be prepared for local pickup or shipping, depending on size and construction.

A NOTE ON SENDING US AI IMAGAES...

Why AI-Generated Artwork May Need Additional Preparation

AI-generated artwork can look incredibly detailed on a computer or phone screen, but that does not always mean the image contains enough actual resolution to reproduce that detail on a large wood sign.

Most AI images are created as relatively small raster images made from pixels. When that image is enlarged from a few inches to a sign that may be 24, 30, 36 inches or larger, those same pixels are simply stretched over a much larger area. The result can be visible pixelation, soft edges, lost detail, and an engraving or carving that does not look as sharp as the original image on the screen.

For example, an image that is only about 1,400 pixels wide may look beautiful on a monitor, but when enlarged to 30 inches wide it provides fewer than 50 pixels per inch. A high-quality source image for that same size may need several thousand pixels across.

Simply increasing the DPI number or enlarging the file does not restore missing detail. AI upscaling can sometimes improve an image, but it is estimating and recreating information that was not present in the original.

Wood also introduces physical limitations that do not exist on a computer screen. Fine lines, tiny textures, subtle shading, and extremely small details must be large enough for the laser beam or cutting tool to reproduce them reliably. Wood grain and the natural variation of the material also affect the final result.

For larger and highly detailed signs, artwork may therefore need to be:

  • Generated or supplied at a much higher resolution

  • Professionally upscaled and cleaned

  • Simplified for engraving

  • Converted or redrawn as vector artwork

  • Adjusted for the size of the finished sign

  • Test engraved before full production

We are happy to work with AI-generated artwork, but the artwork must be properly prepared for the size, material, and production method being used. A beautiful digital image is the starting point—the production-ready artwork is what allows us to turn it into a beautiful physical sign.

Personalized Gifts and Keepsakes
Signs are now the primary focus of The Plaid Dog Workshop, but we continue to create a limited selection of personalized gifts, pet items and memorial keepsakes.
These pieces use many of the same materials and engraving methods found in our custom signs.
